With a birthday-concert in honour of Richard Wagner on Friday and yesterday’s event “Wagner meets Jazz” the “Wagner  Festtage Leipzig 2009” were brought to a successfull end.

Fom May 17th to 23rd  2009 the festival presented a multi-faceted program of concerts, lectures and other events, which this year especially dealt with the young  Richard  Wagner and his familiar and artistic environment. About 2.000 people attended the 16 events of the festival.

The members of staff, who were engaged in organizing the festival, want to express their gratitude to all interpreters, organizers, donators and sponsors as well as to all voluntary cooperators and to the audience!

We ask you already at this stage to look forward to the “Wagner  Festtage Leipzig 2010”, which again will take place around Wagner’s birthday, the 22nd of May.

The press review as well as photos of the events will be at your disposal in the following weeks on the website.

Monday, May 18th 2009  |  „Wagner Festtage Leipzig“ successfully started into their fourth year

With the premiere of the Wagner-Anthem, created by Stephan König and Andreas  Reimann, in yesterday’s late afternoon the  fourth “Wagner Festtage Leipzig” were opened. Conducted by Georg Christoph Biller, Cantor of St. Thomas, more than hundred young vocalists chanted on top of Leipzig’s  “Grünem Hügel” (Green Hill)

Entertainer Paul Fröhlich, well-known in our town, presented the program already for the fourth time in his usual sharp-witted way. Having welcomed the nearly 600 visitors, he led them in a sort of procession to the out-pegged ground plot for the projected Festival House Leipzig. Architect Gunnar Volkmann invited to the first guided tour through the imaginary space. Subsequently the groundbreaking took place, rapturously applauded by the public.

A culinary highlight was the traditional tasting of the “Wagner-Brühe” (Wagner Broth). The Master chefs of the International Kochkunstverein Leipzig 1884 e.V.  offered the delicacy in new composition according to historical antetype and enriched with gold foil.

The evening ended up with a opulent display of fireworks against the background of a tempestuous scenery – a really stagy finale.

On behalf of the 126th anniversary of the death of Richard Wagner the Wagner associations decided to cooperate more closely.
In preparing the 200th birthday of the composer in 2013 every association set its special goal. The Richard-Wagner Verband Leipzig strives for the establishment of a museum and for organizing meetings and frequent disputations about the composer at public events. The Richard Wagner Gesellschaft Leipzig 2013 takes care of the Wagner Festtage in May, and the Wagner Memorial Association aspires to build a memorial of the young Wagner in the city of Leipzig.

Additionally the three bodies  in a common letter appeal to the responsible authorities of the city to speed up the preparations for 2013. According to City Council’s Resolution from 12 December 2008 a jury should be constituted for selecting  the activities around the jubilee, but has not yet taken up its work. One of the demands concerns the support for the staging of the “Ring des Nibelungen“ at the Leipzig Opera House until 2013, another refers to the establishment of a museum which deals with topics like prejudices against Wagner and misinterpretations of his views. Last not least a Wagner Monument should be built.
