After its foundation on 7th of November 2002 in the Leipziger Alten Börse the “Richard Wagner Gesellschaft Leipzig 2013 e.V.” started its work. Our mission is to close up a gap in the cultural life of the town by restoring the composer Wagner to the place due to him in the years to come.
It is our goal to have a thorough look at this ambivalent genius, free of mouldiness or blind homage. Rather shall critical, modern, ingenious and unconventional events, alternating every year, be conceived and carried out, which consider all aspects of Wagner’s music and personal life, the controversial sides as well. For this purpose in 2006 the “Wagner Festtage “ were brought into being, which with regard to Wagner’s 200th anniversary will take place every year around his birthday on May 22.
Furthermore, the Richard Wagner Gesellschaft Leipzig 2013 e.V. intends to dedicate itself to the historical environment of the composer, to known and unknown contemporaries and their influence on his oeuvre.
At last in cooperation with several other institutions of Leipzig a modern room of general interest shall be found, which could be used culturally as well as economically. This multifunctional meeting-place shall emblematise Wagner’s idea of bringing together the different arts and trades, uniting them to one great universal work of art.
